Sulfur is found in crude oil as hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and similar sulfur compounds (mercaptans, sulphides, disulfides, thiophenes, etc.). The presence of sulfur in crude oil and products is undesirable because it gives bad odor to the environment, its toxic feature, its acidic character causes corrosion and lowers the octane value of gasoline.
Organically bound chlorine in petroleum products decomposes at high temperatures and releases hydrochloric acid. This can also cause damage.
Sulfur chlorine determination system is used for the determination of sulfur and chlorine in order to ensure compliance with the standards stipulated in all products from low sulfur fuels to crude oil.
