Media (medium, culture medium) are media formulated for the development of microorganisms. These can be for many different purposes such as the development of microorganisms, isolation, identification, enumeration, susceptibility tests, sterility tests, examination of clinical samples, food, water and environmental controls, obtaining
biological products, antibiotic and vitamin analysis, industrial analysis, etc..

Since the 1950s, ready-to-use media has been produced and marketed by some media manufacturers. These are broth and solid media in screw cap tubes and bottles, and most commonly agar media in Petri dishes. Generally, agar media prepared in plastic Petri dishes can contain only one type of media, or different media can be found in boxes divided into two or three.
